How Atlas Secure came about

There are two of us. One finished the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); the other read Information Technology in International Business at MGIMO. One saw networks as an engineering problem, the other as a market. It turned out to be the same problem.

In the autumn of 2014, while one of us was studying in Hong Kong, it became clear what that problem was made of. On 28 September mainland China blocked Instagram — because of photographs from Hong Kong streets. And a week and a half earlier a link to a “coordination app” called Code4HK had spread through messengers: for those who installed it, strangers were reading their messages, their contact list and their call history, and watching a dot on a map. People were cut off from the world in one move — and read in the same moment.

That is not where we started. First there was a small shop: network hardware and digital goods. It fed two people and taught us what no specification does — people pay for a thing they understand, one that works without a manual. Only later, for ourselves and for friends, did we put together our first protected connection. It turned out to be needed more than the shop.

Then came investment, several attempts that came to nothing, and one more round. For that round we came back to that same thought from 2014 — and in 2016 we registered Atlas Secure in Hong Kong. Today it is part of the QoDev group: an internet accelerator, dedicated servers and traffic packs.

Not a skill, not a separate purchase, not a reason to learn settings. You open the app and everything works the way it should by default: sites open, video plays, and what you do online stays your business.
